The word ‘metaphysics’ has multiple meanings. We often see this word refer to preternatural spiritual forces, i.e metaphysical beings. In philosophy, metaphysics is our understanding of the underlying nature of reality. Some concepts in Heathenry and Norse Paganism stem from the Old Norse understanding of the world.
However, it’s important to remember that American Norse Paganism is mostly built upon Historical study rather than Religious study, which has created a lopsided impression of what Norse Paganism is in a global setting. Some of the “Norse philosophies” and even practices we have in American Heathenry were popularized best-guess interpretations of past ideas, or even made-up concepts inspired by Old Norse culture (like runic divination).
But the stance of this website is to provide a descriptive rather than a prescriptive approach to Heathenry, which means explaining what Heathenry is now as opposed to what it ought to be. It’s in the nature of Heathenry to change and grow with its people, after all. Nevertheless, disambiguation is (or will be) provided so readers can make informed decisions about what they adopt in their practices.
