Overview

Aegir is a jötun who personifies the sea. With his wife Rán, he has nine daughters, who each personify the different ocean waves.

In Norse Mythology

The Aesir one day demand that Aegir hold a banquet for them at his hall, which Aegir brushes off on the pretense that he doesn’t have a cauldron big enough to brew all the mead the Aesir would need. Unfortunately for him, Thor fetches a cauldron that fits the size requirement, forcing Aegir to comply. The banquet goes downhill when an embittered Loki kills two of Aegir’s servants and slanders the gods during the feast.
