Overview

The hamingja is a part of the multipart soul, a concept found in Norse Heathenry. It represents what we make of our circumstances and the way we shape our reality. The way we shape our reality is not limited to us and impacts the lives of others as well as our own, especially for those younger than us. Because of this, the hamingja we shape is passed down from one generation to the next. The hamingja we receive from our families and communities is something that has been cultivated down the line of generations—behaviorally, financially, emotionally, and environmentally. It leaves us after we die.

The hamingja can also carry any so-called “family curses” we may have received—unhealthy behaviors which pass from parent-to-child, sometimes without awareness. Family curses are broken by understanding their mechanism of action, and by interrupting ourselves whenever we display the behavior. It’s important that we shape our hamingja contentiously in order to create a wonderful future for our progeny and our future selves.
