Overview

Thurisaz (or þorn, þurs) is a rune in the futhark alphabets.

Meaning

Thurs are jötnar (giants) who are known for being particularly hostile to people. While all jötnar are associated with the forces of nature, the Thurs are specifically associated with forces that are fundamentally incompatible with human life: Rockslides, volcanic eruptions, and any extreme environment. Thurisaz’s association with giants also begets an association with the god Thor and his hammer, Mjolnir. Thor uses his hammer to drive off hostile giants from Asgard.

The shape of Thurisaz also evokes thorns, which stab us if we mess with them.

Due to the nature of its associations, Thurisaz is regarded as a rune of strife, terrible force, and consequences.

Divinatory Meaning

The divinatory meaning of Thurizas depends on the runes around it and the nature of the query. Its association with hostility means this rune can indicate conflict, opposition, and oppressive forces. But the “terrible force” of Thurisaz is also the same force embodied by Thor and his hammer, Mjolnir, which he uses to protect people from the giants. While the energy of this rune is the same no matter what, its application can vary extremely.

Use in Bindrunes

In bindrunes, Thurisaz is used for hexing and affliction. It can also be used as a ward and a barrier.
