Overview

Utgard-Loki is a jötun illusionist featured in Norse mythology. In one of the myths, Thor and Loki journey to Jötunheim and come across a giant named Skrymir, who points them in the direction of Utgard-Loki’s castle. There, they come across a massive fortress, and there they meet Utgard-Loki, who says anyone who dines at his table must be able to perform impressive feats.

Thor, Loki, and Thor’s servant Thialfi partake in different contests, but all were bested by Utgard-Loki’s men. They went to bed that night hungry, but woke up in the morning to a breakfast prepared for them. As they were leaving, Utgard-Loki admitted to Thor that he deceived them all with illusions, and asked for them to never come to his castle again for how terrifying their abilities were. Then he and his castle vanished, never to be seen again.
