The Norns are three women who represent the Norse concepts of fate and destiny. Their names are Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld. They weave the Wyrd of reality—the outcomes of situations and actions. They also determine oorlog, the individual situations of human beings. The concepts of “fate” and “destiny” in the Norse worldview are not equivalent to predestiny. We are creatures of free will. But while we choose the threads we weave and how to weave them, we cannot choose the fact they are woven and cannot change what’s already been woven. The Norns represent the relationship of what we can and cannot change.
